Müge Durusu-Tanrıöver

She received her BFA degree from Bilkent LAUD in 2006 and her MA degree from Bilkent University's Department of Archaeology in 2010. She pursued her PhD degree in the field of archaeology at Brown University (Providence, RI) between 2010-2016 as a Fulbright grantee, and worked as a faculty member in the same university upon her graduation. Her PhD dissertation focused on how pre-modern empires functioned in their borderlands, and explored the impact of imperial mechanisms on space and material culture in the particular example of the Hittite Empire. She has been an active fieldwork member in archaeological projects since 2007, and continues to conduct research and to publish on archaeological landscapes.
Highlights
Dr. Müge Durusu-Tanrıöver is the project leader and field director of PLAS, and its specialist for second-millennium BCE ceramics. As the first project to specifically target the Late Bronze Age in Polatlı, PLAS systematically collects archaeological data at a regional scale.
The project investigates the imperial strategies of the Hittite Empire (c. 1650–1180 BCE) along its western frontier, and how local populations responded to Hittite imperialism. It asks whether the empire controlled the area through larger urban centers or governed Polatlı as a rural hinterland, and how material practice connects the Hittite period to the Bronze Ages that preceded it and the Iron Ages that followed. Fieldwork has been carried out with the permission of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, with support from institutions including Bilkent University, Koç University's AKMED, Temple University, and the Archaeological Institute of America.
