Exercices using different social and geographical analysis methods (such as; urban land use analysis, statistical research methods, path analyses, demographic surveys and models, retail area analysis, transportation analysis, location-spacing and size analysis) Concept of 'metropolitan area' and its inner structure and fragments. Analysis of each fragment and each layer of one specific metropolitan city according to different levels of geographical, social and physical analysis techniques.
objectives
Students will:
- have an understanding and appreciation of the development of urban communities and associated problems,
- develop their capacity for critical thinking, for research and analysis,
- gain the ability to define problem nodes in urban context,
- develop the ability to use analysis techniques appropriately in different types of problems,
- build a trajectory map related to priorities and solutions, -to be able to raise
some new proposition related to (examined ) city.
methods
The course objectives will be achieved through a program of readings, class discussions and activities, and written work. The instruction will incorporate various interactive exercises in which the students are expected to participate, designed to exemplify the topics under consideration. This is a seminar and experiential style course, not lecture based.
assessment
Quizzes on the readings, participation in discussions, fieldwork, presentation of some analysis techniques by students, implementation of analysis and mapping, attendance.
