This course deals with issues of growth and development of cities and urban communities with reference to different urban  theories, differentiation of functions, ecological patterns of land use and  migration patterns (Urban sociology theories, contemporary theoretical perspectives (Chicago School, Classical urban development theories-Ernest Burgess' Concentric Zone Theory, Harris and Ullman's  Multiple Nuclei Theory, Transportation theories and ; Land theory and dynamics; CBD; housing; industry/wholesale spaces. Conflict Theory, Henri Lefebvre, David Gordon, Michael Storper and David Walker, Manuel Castells, David Harvey, Allen Scott, Growth Machine, John Logan & Harvey Molotch).

objectives

Become familiar with different theoretical  frames pertaining to urban sociology and geography and give  the capability to understand and analyze the structure of urban environment by looking through various fragments using economic, sociological, geographical variables.

methods

The course is conducted by a series of lectures and discussion of selected readings, there are workshops to analyze urban structure.

Attendance, Participation, readings, midterm and final examination, presentations.
